In the North of the mountain ranges which cross the province, from the Serrania de Ronda up to the mountains of the Axarquia, there is a territory, which is at the same time a cross-way of eastern and western Andalusia, of the Andalusia of the Guadalquivir and the Mediterranean one.
Its central location has permitted the development of the main communicating junction and the natural corridor, which throughout history canalized the communications between upper and lower Andalusia, between Granada and Seville, and which supported an important exchange between men and cultures.
The region of Antequera is composed by plain lands and wavy fields, which are dotted by hillocks and hills, and offers the visitors a landscape of meadows, fields and monuments from the caves of San Marcos to Cañete la Real. Antequera’s monuments that are created by men, such asdolmens and baroque churches, convert it into a jewel of historic Andalusian heritage. Its natural monuments, which extend from the Fuente de Piedra to the Sierra del Torcal, make water become the sovereign of the landscape. One of them is a holy shelter of flamingos and the other a mysterious stone temple, which has been carved by water since the mountains rose from the sea.
Beyond Antequera, from Campillos to Teba and from Ardales to Bobadilla, the rivers transformed themselves into lakes and the hillocks crowned themselves castles and fortresses, joining nature and history all along one of the most attractive tours of Andalusia. To all that we have to add the significant monumental riches, particularly artistic and archaeological, of the town of Antequera, that include some of the most important national places of interest, such as the Real Colegiata de Santa Maria la Mayor, which is doubtlessly the most significant monument of the city due to its magnificence and its exceptional location.
