Sierra de las Nieves

Diputación de Málaga
Cabecera-Sierra-de-las-Nieves

Located in the western central area, this region occupies a surface of about 68.260 ha and is situated behind Marbella.

In the hinterland, a varied and particular landscape is hidden which is characterized through the abrupt mountains and fertile valleys dominating the Sierra de las Nieves. These mountains are a small uneven mountain chain of exceptional ecological richness and were therefore declared Natural Park in 1989, and National Park in July 2021.

The park has got diversified vegetation, here gall-oak and Spanish fir predominate the landscape. On lower plateaus, holm and cork oaks stand out from other species, such as carob and chestnut trees. In this habitat, protected species, as for example the wild cat, the golden eagle and the otter, exist although of the latter only a few specimens are left.

Together with the surrounding villages, this is one of the last places where men live in peace with nature. The traveller will find inside these villages the best of all traditions: beautiful popular architecture, a rich cuisine, high quality handmade products and the cordiality of its inhabitants.

The UNESCO has recognized the uniqueness of this place, and had included it with the name “Sierra de las Nieves and its surroundings” in its international network of the Biosphere Reserves in 1995.

Thanks to that, Sierra de las Nieves could benefit from the first Tourism Revitalization Plan, which is granted to an interior area. With this 5 years plan, co-financed by Malaga Provincial Council, the Regional Ministry of Tourism, Commerce and Sport and the General Secretary for Tourism, the area has received an important tourist infrastructure.
