The municipality of Yunquera is an environmentally privileged area in the Sierra de las Nieves region. It has been declared a Nature Park by the Junta de Andalucía and a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. The territory boasts extensive natural and ecological resources that have been well preserved throughout time. This is mainly because earlier generations have made use of them without threatening their sustainability.

Yunquera has every reason to hold a food festival of such importance, given its traditional culinary customs and the region's high-quality farm produce.

The Wine and Chestnut Festival offers visitors the chance to savour chestnuts in every form—roasted, in syrup, cooked, candied or picked directly from the tree—and fine wine, including sweet, rosé, white and must. Hundreds of people yearly visit Yunquera during these days to pay tribute to the chestnut fruit, a typical autumn food. The event also aims to acknowledge the attributes of the exquisite wine made from grapes that have grown in the cold land of the Sierra de las Nieves.

The opening of the artisan and commercial area marks the beginning of the festival. Over twenty stalls offer to the public the most typical mountain products such as madrone fruits, cold meats, and Sierra de las Nieves olive oil, as well as the traditional pottery of the area.

The festivities are rounded off with grape and chestnut harvest related activities like some spontaneous flamenco singing and dancing, guided nature tours and through the narrow streets of Yunquera, the Tapas Route, chestnut tastings at the town square, live orchestra music, contests, verdiales performances, and the Chestnut Flamenco Festival—considered to be the most anticipated event.

Indeed, any action taking place during the festival revolves around wine and chestnut culture. The cooking contests include chestnut as the key ingredient, and grape treading is also part of the celebration. As it cannot be otherwise, visitors will also have the chance to discover the malcocinao dish. Elaborated with chickpeas, bacon, chorizo and black pudding, it is the most typical one in Yunquera.
