U.S. Independence Day is an important occasion for this town in Málaga. It is a day to remember the contribution of the villager Bernardo de Gálvez to the American Independence, who led the colonists to victory against the English in Florida at the battle of Pensacola.
He was born in 1746 and appointed Governor of Louisiana in 1776. His intervention was considered to be so decisive for the American independence that he marched through the streets of Philadelphia alongside George Washington in the victory parade.
The historical-military representations and parades by the Granaderos y Damas de Gálvez and Torrijos 1831 associations stand out among the many activities carried out during the festival, as well as the tasting of the traditional mead liqueur—fermented honey that Spanish troops used to drink at the time. These events are topped off with music, period costume competitions, documentary film screenings, traditional American barbecues, and fireworks
