Turkey Festival. April. Unique Festival
This festival has been declared to be of Tourist Interest by the Provincial Council of Málaga.
Please check with the local Town Hall or Municipal Tourism Office for the festival date before planning any sightseeing activities.
Cañete la Real Town Hall put forward this initiative at the beginning of 2014 in an effort to foster tourism and promote the local turkey industry, a major source of labour—there are several turkey farms in the municipality. The event is sponsored by the company Procavi, which is Europe's fourth-largest producer of turkey meat.
A superb barbecue is celebrated in the Plaza de la Paz square where one can taste all kinds of turkey meat, stewed or grilled.
Over 50 artisan entrepreneurs from all over Andalusia flock to this culinary festival attended by thousands of visitors. Other local delicacies such as white cheese, organic products, honey, and chacina (cold meats) can also be tasted and purchased.
Besides the cuisine delights offered, a cultural tourism programme rounds off the festival with guided itineraries around the town. These include free admission to the Hins Canít Castle, the “Los Vigías del Territorio” (“Guardians of the Territory”) Historical Interpretation Centre, the Church of San Sebastián, and the convents.
