This festival has been declared to be of Tourist Interest by the Provincial Council of Málaga.

The brotherhood then called Cristo de la Sierra first conducted the Santísimo Cristo de la Sierra procession in 1954, coinciding with the opening of the rebuilt hermitage that had been destroyed in 1936.
On the Thursday before the procession, the image of Christ is carried down from the hermitage to San Lorenzo temple, an occasion for which the village is garnished with palms and flowers. Tradition dictates that only young women must carry the trono (float), accompanied by choir voices and a band playing drums and cornets.

Ever since 1996, a 30-carriage pilgrimage leaves Málaga the Friday before the procession day and heads for the Abdalajís Valley. This pilgrimage takes two days to travel across the Guadalhorce Valley and is warmly welcomed in every municipality on its way.
