Every year, Zapata—a rural quarter of Alhaurín de la Torre—holds the Feria (“fair” in Spanish), originally first celebrated in the 1960s. This celebration coincides with the festivity of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción (Our Lady of the Assumption) and the start of the agricultural season.

In 1990, as the Feria continued to flourish, the first culinary competition takes place, based on a very special idea: every presented dish must be shared with the entire audience. And this is how the Food Festival was born, now held at the same time as the competition, offering home-cooked meals prepared by the residents.

The festival boasts two typical dishes nowadays: paella cooked on wood fire, and callos malagueños. The most popular dessert is the local watermelon, which is a renowned variety.
