Fiesta del Agua (Water Festival). Alcaucín. August. Unique Festival

This festival has been declared to be of Tourist Interest by the Provincial Council of Málaga.
Please check with the local Town Hall or Municipal Tourism Office for the festival date before planning any sightseeing activities.

Alcaucín lies on the northern side of the Axarquía region, adjacent to the province of Granada, and it stretches among the impressive Sierra de Tejeda range, the rugged Zafarraya Gap, and the Periana Corridor. Because of its varied and impressive geographical features, it boasts rich, vibrant landscapes.
Steep winding streets, whitewashed houses, and interior patios full of plants and flowers reveal a Moorish layout.

The mountains surrounding the village provide plenty of water, and water plays a leading role in the most amusing festival in the municipality: the Water Festival—celebrated during August in honour of the patron saint, Saint Sebastian.

This party came about spontaneously. At the time of its origin, the villagers were gathering in the town square to complain about the sweltering hot temperatures when some people on the balcony of the Town Hall began to throw water buckets over them. This was a relief from the heat and an excellent opportunity for a fun day. As a result, it was established as a town festival, proving that unexpected events can become a tradition. Such was the impact amongst the locals. The festivity is now part of the celebrations honouring the patron saint of Alcaucín and is aimed at raising awareness about the importance of water and how to use it wisely.

This splashing event is a day to enjoy bubbles and foam, to dance to the sound of the orchestra in the square, or to throw buckets of recycled water to fellow dancers.
