Festival of the Orange. Coín. May. Unique Festival

This festival has been declared to be of Tourist Interest by the Provincial Council of Málaga.
Please check with the local Town Hall or Municipal Tourism Office for the festival date before planning any sightseeing activities.

The Guadalhorce Valley is home to Coín. This municipality extends from the Sierra de Alpujata—one of the mountain ranges dividing the interior of the province—spreading down with no sharp orographic features. Still, it displays strong contrasts that can be observed not only in the changing forms of the terrain but also in the type of vegetation and crops.

While the mountain range is rich in cork oaks and pine groves, in the lower areas, it is the orchards that predominate the landscape, and close to the Guadalhorce River, there are vast fields of citrus and even tropical fruits trees.

The city of Coín is one of the most emblematic municipalities in the Guadalhorce Valley, so it is no coincidence that it is known as “Spring of Light” or “Paradise of Water”. Its landscape and environmental value, together with its monuments, traditions and popular festivals, makes it an exciting destination. It is also known as “The Orange Blossom Valley” for its large orange and lemon groves which, during flowering time, infuse the municipality's surroundings with orange blossom aromas. Every year in May, Coín celebrates the Fiesta de la Naranja (The Orange Festival) to commemorate the end of the harvest, which begins in October and ends in May.

The festival features all sorts of activities that revolve around this citrus fruit. For the day, it becomes an essential ingredient in the preparation of delicious dishes that can be tasted.

Freshly squeezed natural juices, orange salads with cod, desserts and, of course, the classic soup hervía—a typical dish from Coín—will delight the visitors.

Anybody willing to take part in the orange desserts contest can participate.
