The Medlar Day. Sayalonga. May. Unique Festival

This festival has been declared to be of Tourist Interest by the Provincial Council of Málaga.

Please check with the local Town Hall or Municipal Tourism Office for the festival date before planning any sightseeing activities..

Despite being close to the coast, the town of Sayalonga has a layout similar to that of the Axarquía inland areas, presenting an abrupt and rugged orography with no great heights. It is the highest point in the municipality of La Rábita, followed by the Cerro del Mercado hill, adjacent to Corumbela. On a long hill, Sayalonga and Corumbela are located in the foothills of the Penibetic System, halfway between the sea and the Sierra de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Natural Park. Bright white houses and red roofs stand out over green olive groves, almond trees and vineyards surrounding them.

This Axarquía municipality is one of the leading medlar producers in Andalusia. This fleshy, slightly acidic orange fruit is grown on the steep slopes around the town centre and is responsible for tripling the population every first Sunday in May, which is when one of Sayalonga's happiest days takes place:

El Día del Níspero (The Medlar Day). This big festival celebrates the richness of the agricultural production in this privileged area, and it is a tradition attended by many visitors and personalities from all over the province. The squares Plaza D. Rafael Alcoba and Plaza de la Constitución, and the Museo Morisco museum are home to the festival, which begins with an opening ceremony, followed by theatrical performances, musicals, exhibitions and craft stalls. Also, the Golden Medlar is awarded on Andalusian, regional and local levels.

The musical performances will accompany the visitors while they have a free taste of the main regional delicacies, wine, medlars and jam. This Málaga traditional festival offers an excellent opportunity to get to know Sayalonga, a village in the interior of La Axarquía with a Mediterranean feel.
