Día de la Música (Day of Music). Benamocarra. September. Unique Festival

This festival has been declared to be of Tourist Interest by the Provincial Council of Málaga.
Please check with the local Town Hall or Municipal Tourism Office for the festival date before planning any sightseeing activities.

Twelve ceramic murals on the facades of several houses in the centre of Benamocarra bring to life the historical memory of the municipality by telling the story of its origins, traditions and customs. The murals remind us of how memorable the town is, as it has been the birthplace of great musicians such as Eduardo Ocón Rivas (1833-1901)—a renowned composer and organist of the Cathedral whose magnificent organ pieces and spectacular “Miserere” made him famous.

A hundred years after the illustrious musician's death, the Town Hall resolved to pay tribute to his memory by celebrating the Day of Music. The event aims to revive some old recipes and traditions that were about to disappear. During this day, one can also enjoy popular performing groups called “pandas de verdiales”, as well as Medieval-style serenade groups known as “rondallas”. Aside from honouring the 19th-century celebrated composer, the festival seeks to highlight the fact that Benamocarra is home to the oldest music band in Andalusia, including outstanding musicians, conductors and composers.

On the second Saturday in September, Santa Ana Church becomes a meeting point for good music due to its unparalleled acoustics in the whole Axarquía region, along with other stages installed in the streets. The programme offers a series of stalls displaying old musical instrument collections, as well as crafts and artworks nominated for the Benamocarra International Painting Prize (with a 6,600-euro first prize).
In 2008, and coinciding with the 175th anniversary of the birth of Eduardo Ocón Rivas, the Day of Music was awarded the Progress Prize in the culture category for its innovative nature.
