. El Borge, a producer of raisons par excellence, celebrates the “Dia de la Pasa” each year. This festivity is focused around the raisin production, which is a vital part of the village’s economy. On the day of the event visitors are invited to attend some demonstrations of how the raisin production goes on and then how the crop is transported in baskets on the heads of the collectors.
This village of a little over 10.000 inhabitants promotes a fiesta in honour of the raisin from Malaga. More than 10.000 people from all around gather for the festivities on the day and they are given small bags of raisins as well as “gazpacho, Moscatel wine, sausages, and other typical gastronomic products from the Axarquia region. All of this is livened up with live music bands who play local “verdiales” songs and “coros rocieros”.
All kinds of different demonstrations are carried out during the day about how the raisins are elaborated. From the picking stage, its transportation, the laying out of the raisins in the open air to dry, the removal of the pips, the sifting process through to the packaging and the Moscatel grape treading (the juice that is produced is given to the public to taste). The fiesta is held on the third Saturday of September, which is in the middle of the raisin drying and elaboration season.
Some studies has shown that the raisin is beneficial for humans and helps to maintain cholesterol levels balanced, as well as reducing triglrice in the blood, and, as such, in turn to reduce the risk of heart attacks or failure. Therefore, including the consumption of dried raisins into ones diet is very recommendable.
Finally, it should be said that there are three different types of Muscatel;
The green Muscatel grape, to be eaten at once as dessert. The Muscatel for "pasas al sol", which can also be eaten at any time and the Muscatel for the treading press its treading and transformation into wine.
