Thousands of inhabitants from Antequera fill the streets every Thursday and Friday of Easter week (Jueves/Viernes Santo) and run up and down the hilly streets of this municipality of Malaga following the tradition by a group of 50 or more people running through the streets with a huge, heavy religious image on their shoulders.

With the religious images on their shoulders the members of the Cofradîas de los Dolores, el Consuelo, la Paz y el Socorro start the return path back to the sanctuary along the steep streets. The most courageous run up the hills in front of the images or they press themselves against the facades of the buildings that line the way. Others prefer to watch the spectacular ascent from the balconies of the properties on the hill.

The most impressive and visually attractive spectacle of the whole web takes place on the Friday (viernes Santo) when the three most important images belonging to the Cofradîa del Socorro go up three different streets at the same time in order to get to temple of Santa Marîa de Jesús. Throughout the procession they are accompanied by the sound of drums and the bells that are attached to the image they are carry.

The origin of the tradition goes way back to the XVIth century. They used to walk around the streets and when they reached the bottom of the steep hill up to the Ermita de la Veracruz they would have to take a run up in order to get to the top without stopping. Once at the top they used to hold a religious ceremony to bless the fertile plains of the Vega de Antequera.
