International Festival of Mijas. June. Unique Festival
Mijas is one of those places in Málaga that perfectly combine the tranquillity and beauty of traditional inland Andalusian villages with the bustling and modern nature of seaside tourist areas. This charming village with Arab appearance stretches along the mountain slope and can be easily explored on the back of its famous “donkey taxis”. It is divided into three broad areas: Mijas Pueblo, Las Lagunas and La Cala. It is divided into three large nuclei Mijas village, Las Lagunas and La Cala, and successfully manages to achieve the exceptional combination of charming tradition and cosmopolitan modernity—typically seen in tourist destinations. This fortunate blend can also be seen in their festivals: visitors can enjoy a wide range of events, from the passion of Holy Week and popular pilgrimages to multicultural encounters brimming with colours and flavours from different cultures. In Mijas, they are aware that the best way to approach other cultures is through solidarity—learning their customs, dances and cuisine. Based on this initial idea, the locality hosts the International Festival of Mijas, at which culture, folklore and cultural mix come together in an ethnic encounter to celebrate coexistence and tolerance.
Mijas Pueblo welcomes this great exhibition with over 30 countries presenting the best of their cultures at the stands installed in the Plaza Virgen de la Peña square and the Jardines de la Muralla gardens—traditional costumes, handicrafts and gastronomy are all on display. You will find music and dancing performances on the stages in the square, and there are also parades, workshops and gastronomic tastings from every country—local drinks are offered at the symbolic price of €1. The event (organised by the Foreign Department of the Mijas Town Hall) is attended by 35 foreign clubs and associations in the Costa del Sol.
In a successful attempt to embrace the various cultures of the town' residents, it takes place in the first week of June, offering an excellent opportunity to exchange languages, dances, meals, games and even patriotic songs.
