Fiesta del Mosto y la Chacina (Wine and Chacina Festival). Colmenar. December. Unique Festival

This festival has been declared to be of Tourist Interest by the Provincial Council of Málaga.
Please check with the local Town Hall or Municipal Tourism Office for the festival date before planning any sightseeing activities.

Colmenar is a municipality in the Alta Axarquía region. Given its unparalleled location next to the Montes de Málaga Natural Park, it offers the perfect setting for high-quality food production, such as its famous cold meats. For many years, the renowned chacinas (cold meats) produced in this locality have been—along with wine and olive oil—the pillars on which the rural gastronomy is based. This healthy diet has been responsible for Colmenar to be widely known as the food pantry of the province of Málaga.

After performing traditional slaughters of pigs in mid-December, as the Christmas holidays approach, the town celebrates the Wine and Chacina Festival. The event attracts a larger number of visitors every year, and they all flock to the Tapas Route to savour some local food. The excellent soil quality for grape-growing, including the acclaimed muscat grapes, results in the outstanding must wine that during the festival is served with exquisite dishes like migas or the well-known “Plato de los Montes” dish.
Visitors will enjoy an extensive agenda featuring Verdiales and flamenco performances, workshops and children's activities.

The municipality offers an exciting visit through its streets, the old town in particular, which still preserves traditional architecture from previous centuries. The Hermitage of Our Lady of la Candelaria, also known as “El Convento”, serves as a viewpoint overlooking the town centre, sitting on a privileged spot in the Alta Axarquía region. Alternatively, visitors have the chance to explore the extensive preserved area that lies under the protection of the Montes de Málaga Natural Park. In fact, the municipality's location allures a growing number of tourists visiting the village to experience not only its cuisine but also its environmental richness.
