Gazpacho Festival. August. Unique Festival

Alfarnatejo is the highest Axarquía municipality in the region. Located 709 metres above sea level and surrounded by spectacular landscapes, it is known as the Pyrenees of the South.
Although there are higher altitude villages in the province of Málaga, the feeling when approaching Alfarnatejo is that of reaching an eagle's nest. The town is a highlight on the so-called Ruta de los Tajos (Route of the Gorges) that also links the Axarquía villages Colmenar and Comares. Some of the most outstanding rocks are the Gómer, Doña Ana and Fraile—these are limestone masses lying on both sides of the Sábar River and very close to Alfarnatejo. From a close-up view, the road opens up and gives access to a small depression over which spreads the urban district of this picturesque village.
Among its many ancient traditions, the town has its own way of making gazpacho, the most typical Andalusian dish, which results in a cold soup made from hand-chopped ingredients and known by the locals as the “Gazpacho de los Tres Golpes”. Its importance is such that there is a Gazpacho Festival celebrated in honour of this exquisite cold soup. Attendees will not only taste the speciality but will also be able to keep the ceramic bowl where the gazpacho is served as a souvenir.
The celebration takes place on the first weekend in August starting on Friday with a flamenco evening. Saturday is entirely reserved for gazpacho, and free tastings are offered in the Plaza de la Constitución square. Then on Sunday, there is a fiesta—for young people mainly—featuring a guest artist. This celebration has become a must for everyone interested in experiencing a gastronomic weekend in a rural setting with breathtaking views over the La Axarquía region.
