Monda Soup Day. March. Unique Festival
This festival has been declared to be of Tourist Interest by the Provincial Council of Málaga.
Please check with the local Town Hall or Municipal Tourism Office for the festival date before planning any sightseeing activities.
Monda is midway between the valley and the mountains, sheltered from the winds by a hill on top of which stands the Castle of La Villeta. Because of its beauty, it was declared a “Picturesque Spot” in 1971, and is part of the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park and is Biosphere Reserve, an environmental protection concept selected by UNESCO to serve as a model of sustainable development. Only half a thousand places in the world enjoy this privileged protection.
Over the last few decades, the demand for a local product or a specific traditional dish has shaped some of the most famous town festivals. Now, a lot of these celebrations have become the best tourist attraction, as is the case of Monda.
Spring arrives, and the municipality celebrates the famous “Monda Soup Day”. It had its origins in the 19th century, and like many typical dishes from Málaga's towns, it was also usual food for those who worked in the fields given its higher energy intake.
The festival promotes the rich cuisine of the municipality while paying tribute to the many people who have managed to preserve this traditional and emblematic dish over time. Because of their efforts, it is now a delicious and exquisite meal with the basic ingredients of the Mediterranean diet.
This is such a special day for locals that even the Town Hall will put a significant number of bread chunks in a giant dornillo—a traditional wooden container—and sprinkle it all with a specific broth based on a sauce of peppers, tomatoes, garlic, beans, potatoes, salt, oil and eggs. Many of the village's neighbours take part in this great lunch and prepare their unique soups, and all visitors willing to enjoy the excellent cuisine of this municipality are invited to taste them. Besides soup, other typical products offered by different local establishments can be tasted too.
