After Christmas, Alozaina—located in the outskirts of the Sierra de las Nieves—holds the Winter Celebrations, one of the most remarkable events in the region. Shortly before Lent, the Carnaval de la Harina (Flour Carnival) is to be held, which dates back to the end of the 15th century.

There are traditional costume and chirigotas (choral folksongs) contests taking place in the town square on Saturday night. Besides, everyone in Alozaina carries individual bags full of flour to be put on anyone on their way, which is why the celebrations are also known as the Fiesta del Harineo.

Tradition has it that this Carnival celebration form comes from an ancient practice of young men in the village courting young women by “flouring” them. If the lady showed an interest in her suitor, she would answer by coating him with flour. “Wheel dancing” and “The Burial of The Sardine” are also typical of these festivities.
