Day of the Tagarnina (Spanish oyster thistle). Villanueva del Rosario. March. Unique Festival

This festival has been declared to be of Tourist Interest by the Provincial Council of Málaga.

Please check with the local Town Hall or Municipal Tourism Office for the festival date before planning any sightseeing activities.

Tagarnina (Spanish oyster thistle) is a wild edible vegetable commonly used in stews, scrambled eggs, and salads. In Villanueva del Rosario, the habit of going to the countryside and pick tagarninas has been deeply rooted for years—the villagers are the ones collecting and pruning them.

In keeping with this custom, the municipality celebrates a day that not only appreciates the traditional culinary use of this produce, but also the environmental and landscape values of the region.

The festival takes place around the last weekend of March. During this day, free tastings of the famous “Tagarnina stew” are offered, as well as hiking activities, the traditional “Ascent to Hondonero” race, musical performances by local groups, children's activities, and stands where one can purchase local food and craft items.
