Basin of the Guadalmedina River. Interactive map. Environmental and cultural values

The river Guadalmedina, whose name means "river of the city", is located between the river Velez, to the east, and the river Gudalhorce, to the west. It is born in a karstic source in the foothills of Cerro de la Cruz (1.360 m) in the southern slope of Sierra de Camarolos. It is 47-km long and is divided into three stretches:

1) From the source to the surroundings of Montes de Malaga (meaning "Malaga Mountains"), with an approximate length of 9 km. flowing north-east to south-west.

2) The second stretch is nearly three and half kilometers long, and coincides with the so called Colmenar-Periana Corridor, where the river flow turns east to west.

3) In Casabermeja, the river changes direction again, flowing north to south and keeping this way until it reaches the river mouth, in Malaga city.

The two first stretches are almost rectilinear, whereas the last stretch shows multiple and very close meanders.
