DESCRIPTION

Next to the street called Calle Carreterîa, stands San Julián Church-Hospital. Its origins go back to the Charity Hospital, founded by the Catholic Monarchs with the name Hospital del Rey, where not only did they cure the ill but they also gave shelter to the poor and homeless.

In 1680 the Hospital and all its property passed into the hands of the Order of San Juan de Diós, which founded the brotherhood called the Santa Caridad de Ntro. Sr. Jesucristo and the San Julián Hospital, to give shelter to the poor and beggars as well as to give support and bury persons condemned to death.

In 1821, the Municipal Charity Board closed the church and dispersed the Brotherhood.

In 1924, the building was ceded to the Town Hall to attend the poor and the injured in the Africa War. It was closed in 1931

In 1972, the Bishop of Malaga regained ownership, assigning it to the Holy Week Brotherhoods Association for as their headquarters and to house the Historical Museum and Malaga's Brotherhoods Museum. This made it possible to restore the building, which was re-opened as a church in 1988.

________________________________________________________________________

One of the most outstanding features of this church are its paintings, the work of Juan Niño de Guevara and which represent the final period of the artistic evolution of this artist. He painted a total of nineteen different scenes of which fifteen have been conserved, dedicated to paying tribute to charity, the soul and guiding light of the Brotherhood.

His main work, The Triumph of Charity, currently occupies the back wall of the church and is considered the best of the artistic ensemble, both in composition and in its lines. Other works include the Emperor Heraclito Wearing the Habit of Penitence; The Invention of the Cross; The Life of Saint Julián, as well as a group of six oval paintings.

In the upper part of the main altar there is a circular canvas with the image of the Trinity, a clear reference to the God of love. In the centre of the vault appear the three Theological Virtues: Faith, Hope and Charity.

The pictorial elements of the church have today been modified in accordance with the use defined by its new owners, and thus the central niche contains the image of Christ Resuscitated, patron of the Brotherhoods Association. To the right of this altar there is also another patron of the Brotherhoods Association, the image called Sacred Mary, Queen of the Heavens.

The two lateral altars, closest to the Main Chapel, are occupied by processional images of the Brotherhood called of Las Penas, on the left, an image of Christ Crucified called the Crucificado de la Agonîa and to the right, Our Lady, Virgen de las Penas.

The building is constructed in masonry and brickwork, with ashlars on the corners. The main portal is located laterally to the axis of the church, with a round arch. The top section of the arch has a niche topped by a curved pediment that contains an image of Saint Julián.
