Monuments and Art > Sculpture and Monolith

Recommended month to visit it: May.

In an strategic area of the Valle del Guadalhorce, between Álora and Cártama, crossed by the Guadalhorce river and in the shade of Sierra de Gibralmora we find Pizarra.

In 1916, the count of Puerto Hermoso, Fernando Soto Aguilar, ordered the construction of a Sacred Heart of Jesus in bronze and cast iron of 2.5 metres of hight, on a rotatory plate, to place it on the summit of the Sierra de Gibralmora, near Pizarra.

This sculpture was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War and a cross was erected in its place, until 1995, when it was replaced by a new sculpture of the Sacred Heart, by a sculptor of Jaén called Miguel Fuente del Olmo. It stands in one of the highest points of the Sierra, opening its arms to the town of Pizarra and its meadow. Nearby, before reaching the top, the visitor can enjoy a recreational area and a small mountain refuge.
