Castillo de Casares (Castle of Casares)
The Castle of Casares is located in the town of Casares, in the province of Málaga. It sits in the upper area of the village, in the so-called Recinto del Castillo (Spanish for “Castle Precinct”), which once belonged to the old Muslim fortress.
Despite the evidence gathered from the 9th -10th centuries, the first written records placed the castle’s existence in the 13th century. It would be strategically located in the route to the mountainous inland areas and serve as a border between the Marinids and the Christian Kingdoms.
In order to accommodate the relief of the land, it was built to an irregular architectural design, featuring two original angled entrances with arched doorways in Calle Villa and Calle Arrabal.
