Monuments and Art > Hermitage and Chapel

This is a temple from the 17th century, which is the end product of a series of reforms. A large part of it was destroyed during the French invasion, and the only parts that survivied in tact were the and the Capilla del Socorro. Once the decision had been taken to rebuild, this very samew chapel became the Main Chapel in the new building. It has an hexangonal floor plan and is covered with a half-barrel vault, broken up by large light holes. It is decorated quite grandly with crests, tufts and small angels that surround symbols that refer to the Virgin Mary.

The Main altarpiece, despite being a Baroque design, is quite simple. It was the work of Antonio Rivera (son) from Antequera, and contains the most beautiful piece in the whole temple: a chapel for an image from the 18th century richly decorated in plasterwork figures. The Virgen del Socorro presides over it from her small temple. This image from the 17th century is paraded through the streets on Good Friday much to the delight and fevour of ther people who acclain her. It joins in with the other brotherhoods on this day in, what is known locally as, Correr la Vega”

The side altarpieces in this chapel, which are dedicated to the Cross of Jeruselem and to Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno, are also wonderfully put together and may even be the work of the other one. There is an anonymous sculpture of Jesús Nazareno from the 18th century here.

La Real e Ilustre Archicofradîa de la Santa Cruz en Jerusalên y Nuestra Señora del Socorro is the owner and maintainer of this building and has been since the sale of Church lands. They preserve a lot of the very rich heritage related to the whole world of the Easter processions. The majority of them are kept on exhibition at the Municipal Museum where they have a hall to themselves.
