Church of Our Lady of Consolación

C/ Málaga, 5
Zip Code 29310
Monuments and Art > Hermitage and Chapel

Unlike most of the other churches in the region, the Iglesia de la Consolación does not stand at the centre of a square, adopting instead the guise of just another house in Villanueva de Algaidas’ Calle Málaga. The church was built between 1904 and 1907, though its exterior was restored in the 1980s using funds donated by the public.

The exterior consists of two sections and a bell gable. The first comprises the main faèade with pilasters that support a triangular pediment which in turn sustains a further two which flank an image niche housing a statue of La Inmaculada; the second consists of a triangular pediment with a circular window at its centre. The bell gable is formed by a Roman arch flanked by pilasters which houses the bell, crowned by a pediment of varying line topped by a cross.

The interior comprises a single nave and a choir that occupies a third of its length.

798. This is one of the places of greatest interest to visitors to the village. The figure of this particular son of Villanueva de Algaidas is a source of great pride to locals, as Miguel Berrocal is a sculptor of international renown currently living in Verona (Italy).

The Fundación Amigos de Berrocal is the association charged with the conservation and expansion of the artistic treasures of the Exposición Berrocal collection, which contains works by the sculptor.

This exhibition serves as a taster for the forthcoming Museo Berrocal, already destined to become one of Spain’s leading contemporary art museums. Its displays part of the work of this universally-known native of the village, whose work is to be found the world over.

This museum is run by the Asociación "Amigos de Berrocal" and is situated in Calle Granada, 20. Visits must be arranged by telephone on 952 743 131 or by e-mail: amigosb@arrakis.es

Near Villanueva de Algaidas, on the road between the village and the Atalaya district, is a cave church similar to the one in Archidona excavated entirely from sandstone.

It is one of a group known as rural eremitic churches and was built between the IX and X centuries.

It consists of two separate cavities, a larger one housing the church and a smaller 11-metre space. On the northern side of the larger cavity, two gaps provide access to two naves. The one to the right may have been the sacristy, while its left-hand counterpart was probably a type of vestibule. The smaller cavity would have been a living area.
