Shrine of Our Lady of las Flores

The Shrine of Our Lady of Las Flores (the Flowers) is located on the outskirts, about two kilometers from the town of Alora, in the road to Carratraca. From here there is a wonderful and unique landscape and breathtaking views. On the left, the Sierra de Abdalajîs; opposite Virote and El Chopo (the Poplar). In the background, El Torcal. And behind, Mount Hacho, Sierra de Aguas and the Sanctuary.

It is a sixteenth-century religious building restored in the eighteenth century. At the end of sixteen, the Franciscan Recoletos, directed by Fray Diego Gomez, founded the convent. The franciscans remain there until 1835 when, secularised by the confiscation of Mendizabal, abandon it.

The church has a single nave altar on which there is a dressing room with interesting baroque plasterwork on which stands the statue of Our Lady of Flowers. This was brought by the sons of Encinasola accompanying the Catholic Monarchs during the conquest. This image dates from the late seventeenth century and has been restored. It is co-patron of Alora, together with the Virgen de la Cabeza (Virgin of the Head).
