Interpretation Centre of the Water Culture and the Contemporary Culture
The aim of this initiative, financed by the Competitiveness Tourism Plan of Sierra Norte de Malaga, is to present the ethnographic heritage linked to water, its relationship with the population and its hydrogeological processes.
This City Council of Villanueva de Algaidas has given 535 square meters of the main floor of the so-called "Museum Berrocal", located on Vine Street, of the 3657 meters square that make up the assembly, constituted by the building itself and the future grounds. Construction of this building began with the support of the Diputacion of Malaga (Malaga County Council) and other public bodies in 1998.
Miguel Ortiz Berrocal was born in 1933 in Villanueva de Algaidas. Internationally renowned artist, his works are in collections, museums and public spaces in many countries. For over 40 years he lived and worked in Negrar (Italy), taking the decision to return to his hometown in 2005 to build a new workshop of 2500 square meters capable of housing all jobs. He died in 2006 in Antequera. Breaking with the traditional canons of statutory, Berrocal always wanted to penetrate the exterior of the shape, disassembling and going beyond the surface of the sculpture, imagining an inside continuation of external volumes that define the work: "a sculpture within of sculpture".
The Interpretation Centre has covered access, lobby, distributor, public toilets, showroom, conference and projection room. Specifically, the showroom (the largest by size, by having 278 and a half meters square) to display the various artists works (drawings, graphics, paintings, sculptures, etc.). Both belonging to the city and the own "Sculptor Berrocal Foundation for the Arts".
The Foundation, the Centre and the Artist House Museum collect a very important part of the artist's works placed at three different points in the municipality of Villanueva de Algaidas.
