The Moorish Museum

Quality Distinguishing Mark

The Moorish Museum of Sayalonga, opened in November 2006, is located in a building of great historical and visual richness, showing horseshoe arches, beautifully hand carved doors and a variety chromatic walls emulating Moorish wealth. It has had several roles throughout history as it served as a school, town hall and craft workshop.

It consists of several rooms, like the one dedicated to the poet Manuel Fernández Mota, who donated a large collection of books, some dedicated by its authors, journals, and unpublished personal file, some dedicated to the Axarquia and especially to Sayalonga. In this room,it  would also stress the importance of documentary and photographic archive, with documents dating back to 1572.

There are other rooms like the one with the name of the painter Adolfo Cordoba, the Moorish House Chamber, or the Chamber and the Moorish town hall (for temporary exhibitions and conferences). These rooms have a modern audiovisual equipment that gives extensive facilities.

The Plan to Promote Tourism in Axarquia has financed the expansion of the museum, connecting the existing facilities with two lower levels, restoring a player piano owned by the museum and expanding it by creating new rooms, which currently has numerous paintings and archaeological remains.
