Airport Museum

Diputación de Málaga
Museo Nacional de Aeronáutica y Transporte Aéreo. Málaga

Airport Museum

This important and extremely interesting museum is public and is run by the same company that is in charge of the airport; Aena-Aeropuerto de Malaga. In fact, it is the only museum of its kind in the whole of Spain that exhibits pieces from the civil aeronautical heritage.

Its exhibition halls cover about 3000 metres in total and visitors can see historic aeroplanes and items related to the world of aviation and which have been compiled from many of the other Spanish airports. There is also an Aeroplane Observatory that is located inside the old control tower and it looks out over the current runways.

On the way around the exhibition visitors will be able to see some of the old marketing posters that were used to publicise the airport as well as having the chance to sit inside an authentic cockpit of an old Iberian Airlines DC-9. On top of all this there is also an important selection of models, uniforms, and many other items related to the evolution of the aviation industry.

Visitors will also be able to learn what the internal workings of an airport are like as they will examine the technological development the industry has undergone over the years: there are motor engines, runway design models, radio operated lighting, radio control systems, and much more. There are also descriptions of the different professions like air controller, signalman, pilot, stewards, which are all to be found at modern airports, too.

Finally, visitors are invited to experience the museums “Interactive Room”, where they will be able to use different mechanisms that demonstrate the different physical principles that are the foundation of the aviation industry.

The Museum is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday between 10.00am and 2pm, and on Tuesday from 5pm to 8pm. Visits are free and can be accompanied by a museum guide but visitors can also enter with no guide if they want. Groups of 15 or more should reserve before they come.

The Museum can be reached on the local coastal public train to Fuengirola, or on the city buses with the numbers 10 and 19.
