Museo Arqueológico Municipal (Ronda Municipal Museum)

Palacio de Mondragón
Zip Code 29400
Cultural Areas > Museums

Based in the Mondragón Palace, the museum includes an exhibition room on metallurgy where the exceptional mould for the manufacture of Ronda-Sa-Idda swords stands out—it was found in the old town. The museum also has a section for the first Iberian oppida, which in the 6th century BCE introduced in the region, including Ronda, a urban planning model of Phoenician influence that already contained structural axes in its road network.

The Municipal Museum is located in The Mondragón Palace (also known as the Palacio del Marqués de Villasierra), a magnificent piece of architecture and, without doubt, one of Ronda’s finest civil monuments. (See PALACIO DE MONDRAGÓN.)

Inside, the museum is divided into four separate areas, each dealing with a different field of activity: exhibition, research, storage and services.

The exhibition area comprises the different rooms that make up each section of the museum. Three sections are devoted to the exhibits that best represent the city and its surrounding area.

1. The History Section: It reflects both Ronda’s distant and more recent past with a wide variety of archaeological and historical exhibits. Its exhibition rooms address the following subjects: caves, the Megalithic period, monographs of Acinipio, the Roman and Muslim funerary traditions, Old Ronda, the physical and historical evolution of the town and Ronda in the 19th century.

2- The Ethnographic Section: It is home to an ethnographical collection that paints an accurate picture of Ronda’s unique identity by displaying a wide range of exhibits about the town’s popular traditions. Its five rooms address different topics: the world of cork, the still, the traditional cheese production, the kitchen during the ‘slaughter season’ and saddlery; it therefore focuses on the different areas of production, manufacture and consumption on which Ronda’s economy has traditionally been based.

3. The Natural Environment Section: It aims to provide the visitor with a first-hand view of Ronda’s natural environment and the different facets which make it up. The region’s natural areas (Parque Natural Sierra de las Nieves, Parque Natural los Alcornocales and Parque Natural de Grazalema) are the mainstays of this particular section.

The remaining areas consist of sections devoted to a variety of technical tasks, research, storage and museum-related services such as a restoration workshop, classroom, shop, bar, garden, experiment room, multi-purpose room, library, projection room, among others.
