PERIOD 18th century

DESCRIPTION

This church has its origin in a chapel built by the Count of Buenavista between 1720 and 1730, next to his palace in calle Gaona. It was opened for religious services in 1785.

Its faèade is of classic style with a two-door portal between projected towers. The design of the lateral portals, topped by robust curved decorative elements, is more in line with the style found at the end of the 18th century. The etchings that decorate the exterior wall of the original chapel, with intertwined red and ochre geometric forms, respond chronologically to the style of the first quarter of the 18th century.

The most outstanding works in this church are the clothed imagesn.t. of Our Lady Virgen de Consolación y Lágrimas, an 18th century sculpture which belongs to the processional brotherhood Archicofradîa de la Sangre, (restored in 1972 by Álvarez Duarte), and the figure of Christ Crucified, the work of Francisco Palma Burgos (1941). Of particular interest is the Neoclassic canopy, made in 1795 using polychrome marble and wood and attributed to Josê Martîn de Aldehuela.

On the opposite side of the church there is a polychrome clay Ecce Homo, which dates back to the 18th century. The central chapel has a 20th century altarpiece dedicated to the Third Order of the Servants of Mary, which is presided over by an image of Our Lady Virgen de los Dolores, a clothed sculpture by Fernando Ortîz. Over the balcony of the choir stalls, the coat of arms of the Philippians is all that remains of the organ housing built by Aldehuela.
