The Malagueta Bullring.

Paseo de Reding nº 8
Zip Code 29016
Monuments and Art > Remarkable Building

Built in 1874 by Joaquîn Rucoba in Neo-Mudejar style, the bullring is located in Paseo de Reding, in the district of La Malagueta and has capacity for 9.032 persons.

It was inaugurated on 11th June 1876. La Malagueta Bullring, which forms a regular 16-sided polygon, houses the Antonio Ordoñez Bullfighting Museum where visitors will find an array of objects relating to this art.

The articles on display include 'suits of light' (the brightly adorned outfits worn by the matadors and their assistants), photographs, posters and other valuable objects related to what is considered, and called, the 'national festival'. The museum was given its name in honour of the legendary bullfighter from Ronda, Antonio Ordoñez, who had so many glorious triumphs in this bullring.

________________________________________________________________________

Built in 1874, next to the sea, and inaugurated with bulls from Viuda de Murube stock in 1876, since the artist's childhood La Malagueta Bullring constituted a reference point and habitual motif in his first drawings and oil paintings, as well as the element behind the later development of whole Picassian vision of the art of bullfighting. Works such as "El Picador Amarillo" (1889) or drawings of bullfighting scenes carried out in Malaga and when he lived in La Coruña, are true memories of when his father would take him to see the most famous matadors of the period, Mazzantini and Lagartijo.

Of Malaga's bullring, Picasso conserves a series of memories, such as the day in which he saw his maestro, Josê Moreno Carbonero, paint a huge canvas for one of his historic scenes, or the vision of horses disembowelled by the horns of the bull and which, later in the 30s, the Malaga artist was to reflect in so many of his compositions, culminating with the renowned injured horse in the Guernica (1937). On the other hand, Picasso's literary works contain numerous examples of these memories of the national festival, a surrealist and tragic mosaic that reflects, from the bullring of his native Malaga to the last ones he visited - by then in exile - in Arles and Nimes, the vital experience of his most intimate artistic production.
