Santo Domingo´s bridge. THE GERMANS' BRIDGE
PERIOD: 20th century
Santo Domingo Bridge, which joins the district of the same name with Pasillo De Santa Isabel, is known popularly as the Germans' Bridge.
This is because it was a gift from the German community in the city, as stated on the plaque that hangs in the pedestrian walkway: "Germany donated this bridge to Malaga in gratitude for it heroic aid to the shipwrecked sailors of the German war frigate Gneisenau".
The events took place on 18th December 1900 when the German frigate Gneisenau came aground on the rocks at the entrance to the harbour during a storm. Numerous Malaga citizens dived into the water to save the German sailors, many of them losing their lives.
This episode earned the city the title of "Very Hospitable", lemma that appears on the cities coat of arms.
