San Agustin’s Monastery
PERIOD 16th Century
DESCRIPTION
This Monastery, due to the fact that the Order of St. Augustine was particularly dedicated to teaching, is structured in three clearly differentiated parts: on one hand, the church and on the other, the school and the brothers' accommodation, surrounded by a cloistered patio.
Although the Monastery was founded at the end of the 16th century, beginning of the 17th, the structure of the church corresponds to the 18th century and at the end of this period it underwent important reforms.
The church has three naves, the central one with a half-barrel vault ceiling, transverse ribs, and lunettes highlighted by gently curving coving. Of particular interest in the elevation is the alternation of spans of the formeret arches, crowned with an entablement adorned with a continuous line of egg and pearl decorations, which is supported by Corinthian ribbed pilasters that could be attributed, according to various authors, to the style of Josê Martîn de Aldehuela.
