El Nicio Castle

In the upper section of the El Padrón district, some 7 kilometres from Estepona itself, are the ruined foundations of the Castillo del Nicio, a 9th century fortress of which the walls and several towers still remain. It played a key role in the rebellion led by Omar ben Hafsun against the Emirs of Córdoba before finally being captured in 923.

Almost rectangular in shape, it is perfectly adapted to the undulating terrain and displays all the typical characteristics of the castles built during the Caliphate period. Its masonry walls and towers have practically disappeared in some places, standing barely 4 metres high, and the castle is gradually entering a state of ruin.
