Church of San Sebastián

On petition of Queen Isabel The Catholic and with the backing of the Apostolic Commission by Letras y Bulas under the rule of Pope Inocencio 8th, the San Sebatian parish was founded by the Archbishop of Seville in 1505 and in the year 1610 the parish church was built in what is known today as, “La Plaza de la Concepción”. It was destroyed years later by an earthquake and rebuilt half way through the 19th century in a neo-classic style with a Latin cross floor layout, three naves and two bell towers, although the figure of Nuestro Pardre Jesús is of Baroque design.

It is said that the Catholic Kings’ devotion to saint San Sebastián, a man known for his proven holiness, eternal youth and military skills, was the main reason why it he was chosen as the Patron Saint. It was a suitable choice for a period of history full of wars and fighting, as was the “Reconquista”.
