Animal Life > Birds

Bird of small size (about 15 cm or 6 in), very similar physically to other larks (Eurasian Skylark, Crested Lark, Calandra Lark). Upperparts of earth brown colour with a barring of lines in dark tones. Dirty white underparts, more spotted on the breast. Small topknot on the head; short and dark tail, with white outer feathers. Very characteristic black-and-white spots on the front edge of the wing.

Where it lives

Species of open areas with scattered trees or forest edge. Preference for landscapes in mosaic, grassland with scrub or trees and open copses. Very common in olive groves.

How it lives

Species resident all year round in the province. It breeds between March and July and makes two annual layings of 2 to 6 eggs. Nest on the ground, but usually in wooded areas. It feeds on medium-sized invertebrates during the spring and on grains and seeds the rest of the year.

Where it can be seen in Malaga

Frequent bird in the province and easy to watch in the right habitats. The extensive and mid-mountain olive groves are favourable places. In the Great Path it can be observed in stages 10, 11, 23 and 26, among others.

Curious facts

The Latin name of the Sordilla (name in Malaga of this bird) seems to have an onomatopoeic origin (Lullula) and be related to the song of the bird. Its Latin last name clearly relates it to its arboreal habits. In fact, in English it is known as "lark of forest" ("woodlark"), in clear distinction to other topknotted larks (such as the Crested Lark), with very terrestrial habits.
