Los Tajos

Near Alfarnatejo, we can find three of the most spectacular cliffs in the province: Gómer, Doña Ana and Alto del Fraile.

On the Colmenar-Alfarnatejo section of local road 340, the Tajo de Gómer cliffs provide a constantly-visible reference point for our destination. On both sides of the road, fields of cereal crops and olive trees extend for miles. Evergreen oaks and gall oaks add a splash of brown to the uniform grey of the limestone rocks that are circled by the birds of prey that inhabit this incredible landscape.

As we progress, the cliffs seem to acquire a variety of unusual shapes. At Alfarnate Inn, we turn right and make for Alfarnatejo. From hereon, the route runs parallel to the River Sábar, which flows in the same direction that we are travelling in to our right, while on our left, we pass the centre of Alfarnatejo, to which we shall later return..

The River Sabar flows downwards, occasionally bordered by olive trees, gall oaks and meadows which paint a highly pastoral scene. Doña Ana cliffs, so close to the river that they almost block its course, are reminiscent of an enormous guard watching over the horizon. These huge, grey, limestone cliffs stand 1,118 metres high. A lay-by in the road provides us with an opportunity to park up and admire the view from the cliff top.
