Maro Waterfall, Nerja (Unique Site)

Sierra de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama [the mountain range of Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama] meets the see with powerful cliffs of perfect verticality. This coastal landscape is abrupt and varied. We are at the Cascada Grande de Maro [Great Waterfall of Maro].
From the Caves of Nerja, through the Sanguino stream, this waterfall springs forth to a 15 meter fall to meet the sea below with an impact that stuns our senses. To enjoy it, one must view the waterfall from below: kayak between the cliffs, row through the narrow passages, feel the power of the waves below the vessel, or swim.
This is one of the secret places that the Natural Park of the Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo hides. Sea and mountain hand in hand, creating landscapes that stimulate our imagination.

The best panoramic view of this waterfall is from the sea. We get closer to the cliffs of Nerja and to its rocks that seem to be falling down, and we get nearer to unbelievable places washed by waves. Torrents of freshwater drop of its cliffs right into the salty Mediterranean Sea.
Behind a giant rock, Maro Waterfall (la Cascada de Maro) falls down from an altitude of 15 metres and drops roughly into the sea. Therefore, approaching it in a kayak or canoe, and going through these imposing torrents while getting splashed by water is an incredible experience.
Due to the power of torrents and immense water flow, it is impossible to go through the waterfall in spring. Once you are there, it is easy to get spellbound by the water and that thunderous sound. It is very high from the top of the cliff to the sea level, and the look from the bottom makes the waterfall very imposing.
The waterfall comes from the Caves of Nerja and via the Stream Sanguino or the Stream Camplillo. This is one of the treasures hidden in the Nature Beauty Spot of the Cliffs of Maro and Cerro Gordo hill. The unique combination of the sea and the mountains creates an atmosphere that resembles myths and legends and awakes imagination.
Out to sea, there are caves and steep bottom with plenty of plant life, and a big variety of sea animals.
This new distinction named ‘Unique Corners’ appreciate important places that are of environmental, historical and cultural interest and possess natural beauty. Therefore, Maro Waterfall deserves to be one of them due to its incredible attractiveness. This tourist hotspot is located between the beaches of Maro and the beach La Caleta, and can be observed from a boat in the sea.
La Cala de Maro (Maro’s Cove) is one of the best beaches in Andalusia with pure water, easy access and impeccable surroundings. It is only few kilometres away from Nerja and offers a mixture of pebbled and sandy zones fifty metres long and 20 metres wide. This picturesque beach in the Town of Nerja, is hidden behind cliffs, farms and it can be seen out of an old Arab watchtower.
