The Turón Basin – Forest Guard Viewpoint (Natural Monument in the Province)

The view from the northern border of the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park embraces dramatic landscape with many contrasts. Whitish colour of the mountains unfolds their limestone formation, which is why they are rugged and filled with holes and caves. Because of this and the fact that the Sierra de las Nieves mountain range is between Ronda and Málaga, bandits used to hide here in the past. Juan José Mingolla was the last Andalusian bandit, called Pasos Largos [Quick Steps].

The houses in El Burgo, a mountain village originated during Muslim rule, are even whiter. There we can find the ruins of old walls and large fortified towers. The Turón River with lush vegetations on its sides, looks like a long deep scar on this terrain.

The Sierra de las Nieves massif is at the source of four important river basins which take water from the Mediterranean Sea and fill up the nearby reservoirs. The mountainsides are covered in important Spanish fir forests, such as those in Cubero and Ronda, pine forests, like the one in Junquera, as well as in oak and cork oak forests.
