Diputación > Lugar > Comarca del Valle del Guadalhorce

Diputación de Málaga
Cabecera Álora

This region is placed in the west of Malaga and is named after the Valley of the River Guadalhorce at the entrance of the city. It is located in a privileged enclave, near to the capital, the Costa del Sol, the National Park Sierra de las Nieves, the gorge Los Gaitanes and the collection of reservoirs El Chorro, as well as the Mountains of Malaga.

After collecting the waters of the region Antequera and crossing the mountain gorge Los Gaitanes, the river Guadalhorce grows up and forms its own valley, the Valle del Guadalhorce that is considered the most important of Malaga province. The valley, which is at the same time a fertile field of orchards and a way for people, and an amphitheatre of mountains providing water, shelter and landscape. There are vegetable gardens dotted with farmhouses and hamlets, crossed by highways, roads, railways and canals; vegetable gardens which cover the ground of the valley and climb in form of plots over hillocks and hills; they conclude the landscape full of life that struggles between what is and what might have been. In the east of Coin, the villages of the valley move closer to the mountains and bring valley and mountain range together. Between Monda and Guaro, nearby villages of the Sierra de las Nieves rise up to the vegetable gardens the plots, reaching the surroundings of the village, and get there between olive trees and dry land, which marks the border of the meadow and the mountains. The mountain range is mixed with firs and chestnut trees. After them, the landscape climbs up between old firs and the tremendous cliff Los Horcajos to the peaks of the mountains to reach the shady fields and flatland in which the Spanish fir and centenary gall-oaks are registered. And this is also the Valley of Guadalhorce.

One of the peculiarities of this area is the existence of microclimate as a consequence of the plateaus, the location, the sea level, the plain, and the slopes that result in the mildest winters in the whole province. This characteristic climate, without extreme temperatures, converts this area into an ideal place for leisure, sports, cultural and gastronomic activities.

Although officially there is only one Natural Park (the gorge Los Gaitanes), there is a great variety of natural spots and places of environmental interest in the surrounding mountains as well as in the valley.
