Casa Rural "La Zaranda" (Distinguished Establishments)

Unique Establishments

The “Zaranda” is a colonial-style house set at the heart of the area known as the “Fuente de Piedra” which is in the municipality of Antequera. It is a mere 500 metres from the Nature Reserve with the same name that is famous for the groups of flamingos that breed there which are the largest groups in all of Europe.

The building, architecture is true to typical Andalusian style; large spaces, white washes interior and exterior walls, big doors, roof tiles, balconies and terraces. As soon as you arrive your attention is drawn to the façade of the building which has a display of magnificent balconies with exceptional ironwork that stand out from the walls of this very impressive house.

The whole building has been restored and adapted by the new owners in order to function in its new role as a rural tourist accommodation. However, during the whole restoration process much care was taken to keep the original structure and architecture in tact, especially the floors which were protected to maintain the condition that they had in the first half of the 20th century. High stone interior walls give a traditional feel and also keep the whole house cool in summer and warm in winter when the heating is on and the chimney lit.

The installation and all its amenities is divided up on two floors and connected by the newly restored marble staircase, which shows the once-known grandeur the house boasted of.

All the ceilings are high with narrow wooden doors and old-fashioned furniture; some of which are antiques from local antique shops of the region. The wardrobes are large, there are mirrors at the entrances to the rooms and everything is made or clad with wooden articles from the original era which takes the visitor back to colonial times.

The kitchen is also based on the original epoch with a large fireplace in the front and traditional motifs on the sides, (plates…). It is spacious which gives room for parts of the daily life of the hotel to be carried out there. The hotel also has two waiting rooms that are similar to what were once known as “visiting room” or simple “lounges” .

There are 5 double bedrooms, one of which is on the ground floor and has been adapted for disabled people.

All the exterior perimeter of the hotel grounds that is not part of the façade is surrounded by a high wall which creates an “open area” where cars can be parked. It also acts as a kind of courtyard/garden with grass, palm trees, jasmines and other wild plants grow. There is a swimming pool in the middle of this area which invites visitors to enjoy a dip.

The access to this establishment is very easy as there is a local bus stop 10 metres outside the main hotel door, a train station at Bobadilla only 15 minutes away which is connected to the rest of Spain as well as being easily accessed by road.

Obviously, the hotel’s location also allows the visitor to take part in a series of leisure activities like hill-walking, horse riding, cycling tours as well as the opportunity to get to know the rich cultural activity in the municipality and even the local region
