Antiguo Cortijo de Montero: La Casita del Pastor (Distinguished Establishments)
The Cortijo (farmhouse) Montero, located about 8 kilometers from Campillos, is a complex of three houses (El Señorio, La Casa Arabe and La Casita del Pastor), enabling enjoyment together or separate dwellings through a double door system.
El Cortijo de Montero is an old building, as cited in Madoz Geographical Dictionary of 1849. Its recent restoration has been awarded by the Malaga Provincial Council with the Singularity badge. On May 10, 2010 has been voted the best rural accommodation in the province.
Since 1993 the restoration is constant in order to keep the traditional elements that have earned it as one of the few existing authentic farmhouses. Wrought iron, old tile or walls are large items that will not easily find a supply of these characteristics.
Inside the complex visitors may enjoy the leisure and sports facilities (swimming pool, tennis court, football or riding). In the hills of the farm more than 30000 pines and oaks has planted, surrounded by walking trails that allow to stroll comfortably and to enjoy the splendid views.
Around the Cortijo, numerous natural areas can be found for cycling, hiking and water sports.
The Cortijo buildings are surrounded by parks and gardens that give the impression of being an emerging oasis in the dry sober Andalusian landscape. There are two groves of pine and eucalyptus, an arboretum, under shrubs and other plants.
La Casita del Pastor is the "newest" construction from the three buildings settled within the complex known as Antiguo Cortijo de Montero. Since 1993, restoration works have been constant as to keep the traditional elements that have distinguished the building as one of the scarce authentic country houses currently existing. Wrought iron, old tiles, thick walls, ... these are elements that are very rare in this kind of tourist offer.
Its main feature is that visitors can internally access the three houses: through a beautiful patio that connects La Casita del Pastor and El Señorío, and through a double door system that connects El Señorío and La Casa Árabe. This makes it possible to lodge large groups or else gives all the guests the independence they may demand.
La Casita del Pastor, a one-story building can be accessed from the patio through a porch. The patios has an area of 80 m², and summer imprints a unique feature in it: the shadow of a luxuriant "elm tree" and an Oriental plane tree, from where guests can enjoy a breathtaking view of the surrounding green areas. Once inside, guests will find a large lounge-kitchen that has been combined to provide a cosy area for daily life. This part is crowned by a beautiful fireplace that invites all the visitors to enjoy a nice talk or a peaceful reading time. The kitchen area features dark glossy tiles in the bench area, distinctive of old country houses. The whole building is decorated based on the typical characteristics of traditional country homes. The bedrooms surprise us with paintings that do not match the current trends but which used to hang on their walls in ancient times.
The interior of the complex invites guests to enjoy areas devoted to relaxation, entertainment and sports with a swimming pool, a tennis court, a small soccer field, or a riding school. In addition, El Señorío and La Casita del Pastor have their own ping-pong rooms. The hills of the property are planted with over 30,000 pine-trees and holms planted with paths that offers guests the experience of walking all over the area and admiring astonishing views.
Near the farm, visitors can find areas for bicycle rides, trekking, or water-sports such as fishing, canoeing, and windsurf... in the three dams located in the surroundings. Their combined coastal area is 168 km long, even longer than the provincial Mediterranean coastline with 164 km.
The buildings of the farm are surrounded by lush parks and gardens that resemble an oasis emerging amid the sober landscape of Andalusia Dry Lands. Two small forests crowded with pine trees, eucalyptus, bushes and other small plants are among the alternatives offered. The stock of trees deserves special attention since they are the peculiar touch characterising this tourist complex. It groups trees according to their historical evolution and development on our planet. We can even find a "ginkgo biloba", considered a living fossil. This species has been present for 200 million years without any evolution. On the other hand, visitors will find "cicas" or fake palm trees, palms including the blue one as well as some other thick and luxuriant ones, etc. The cultural aspect of this wood is highlighted by the large number of visits from schools and students from different schools-workshops.
