The Copper Forest

El Bosque de Cobre (The Copper Forest)

The Serranía de Ronda offers one of the most impressive autumn landscapes in the inland of the Province of Málaga. Once a year nature gives us the opportunity to enjoy mountains covered in brown, yellow, orange and ochre chestnut leaves.

This area mostly belongs to the Genal Valley, which forms the Serranía de Ronda’s mountainous scenery with two other large surfaces, the plateau and the Guadiaro Valley. Its rugged terrain with steep slopes gets flatter in the area close to the border with Gibraltar, the Costa del Sol and Antequera Plain.

The villages Alpandeire, Benalauría, Cartajima, Faraján, Genalguacil, Igualeja, Jubrique, Júzcar, Parauta, Pujerra and Yunquera, that belong to this area, have a very long tradition related to chestnut trees. You can visit them at any time of the year and see wonderful landscapes, taste excellent dishes and participate in many of theirs celebrations, some of which are considered to be unique festivities of tourist interest in the Province of Málaga.

Advice for visitors

Bosque de Cobre (Copper Forest) is not a public place but belongs to private properties which are means of sustenance for a large part of this area’s population. Don’t miss this wonderful landscape and stop for a perfect photo opportunity at some of the viewpoints or villages in the area. If you decide to get into the forest, you should follow sign posted local tracks or long-distance paths, such as the Serranía de Ronda’s Great Path (GR 141). Three of its stages (the 4th, the 5th and the6th) get close to the Genal River and the chestnut grove, which this area, Bosque del Cobre, is named after.

El Castañar (Chestnut Grove)

Forests are of great importance for the Serranía de Ronda because of ecological, cultural and economic reasons. They are undoubtedly basic part of its fabulous landscape, and its products are the mainstay of many traditional jobs and food and agriculture industry. When brown, yellow and ochre chestnut leaves cover the area, it becomes a tourist attraction and a perfect place for everybody who enjoys spending time in the countryside.

When the time for picking chestnuts comes to its end, people celebrate traditional tostones, by baking chestnuts and drinking aniseed-flavoured and other traditional liquors. These festivities are visited by inhabitants from the Serranía de Ronda, where you can also find a lot of restaurants that offer dishes with chestnuts, or you can buy them in cans or taste raw ones when they are in season.
